Why Peer-Led Mental Health First Aid?

Young people live much of their lives within peer groups. They talk, share, and seek reassurance from friends long before they approach parents, teachers, or professionals. Balanced Futures recognises this reality and responds to it.

Meet Sarah Frazer
Founder, Balanced Futures

MHFA England Certified Facilitator

Sarah Frazer is the founder of Balanced Futures, an innovative Youth Mental Health First Aid programme rooted in a deep commitment to strengthening young people's capacity to cope in an increasingly complex and unstable world.

Today's young people are growing up amid a polycrisis; overlapping social, economic, environmental, digital, and mental health pressures that are reshaping how childhood and adolescence are experienced. Sarah's work starts from a clear-eyed recognition of this reality: systems are under strain, certainty is diminishing, and traditional models of support are no longer sufficient on their own.

Balanced Futures was developed in response to this challenge. Rather than focusing solely on adult intervention, Sarah's approach intentionally builds skills, confidence, and agency within young people themselves, recognising that peers are often the first to notice distress and the first point of contact when someone is struggling.

Professionally, Sarah is an MHFA England Certified Facilitator, trained social worker, and experienced educator. Her background spans residential care, child protection, family therapy, and senior pastoral and safeguarding roles across both state and independent education sectors. This breadth of experience underpins a practice that is both innovative and rigorously grounded in safeguarding, evidence, and lived reality.

Our Approach

Dual-focus Mental Health First Aid

Balanced Futures delivers Youth Mental Health First Aid training through a dual-focus model that is still relatively rare within education and community settings.

Rather than training adults alone, Balanced Futures also trains young people aged 16–18 as Youth Mental Health First Aiders. This embeds essential skills and confidence within peer groups where mental health concerns are most often first noticed.

This approach recognises that:

  • Young people frequently disclose to peers before professionals.

  • Friends observe early changes in behaviour and mood.

  • Peer responses can significantly influence whether help is sought.

By equipping young people with evidence-based training, clear boundaries, and strong links to adult support, Balanced Futures strengthens early intervention without replacing professional or safeguarding roles.

A Strategic Approach to Mental Health

The work of Balanced Futures aligns strongly with key public health and education priorities. By investing in young people as part of the solution, we deliver cost-effective, scalable, and culturally relevant mental health support.

Our work aligns with:

  • Early intervention and prevention priorities

  • Youth voice and empowerment agendas

  • Whole-school mental health frameworks

  • Community resilience and public health strategies

  • Taking the mental health course was surprisingly fun and an engaging experience, I didn't expect it to involve much group work, which I fear but it actually ended up being one of the best parts. Overall, I would certainly recommend this course to other students, as it is both fascinating and meaningful way to better understand and support put community.
